HILL HOUSE RESIDENCE

Hill House and its site occupy the peak of a mountain in Alexandria, NH. The intention of all work on this 40-acre site is to enhance the tremendous existing features of the vernacular landscape. Interventions are intentional, sensitive, and focused on the long term health, inherent beauty and maintenance of the property and local eco-system.

The master plan recommendations focus on four distinctive areas of the managed landscape: the glade, the meadow, the knoll, and the gateway woodlands whose boundaries are partially defined by topography and both old and new stone walls.  Up near the house, terraces and walls create a plinth for the house, mediating between the imposing ledge landscape and the modern barn style of the house.  Outdoor vantage points encourage short immediate views to site and longer views to Newfound Lake, Cardigan Mountain, and the White Mountain National Forest.
