DALAND MEMORIAL LIBRARY
A centerpiece of the bucolic town of Mont Vernon, NH, the Daland Memorial Library is staffed by a team of librarians who are brimming with creativity and dedication to the library’s mission. However, their current space, a 1906 two-room building, is outsized by the town’s demand and extraordinary vision of its staff.
A new library, slated to break ground in 2023, will be roughly three times the size of the current building, and will speak to the agricultural vernacular architecture of the area. It will be sited on a cornfield that is adjacent to the current library and the site’s former farmland will be transformed into a native grassland meadow. G2’s design for the landscape will relate to the building and provide ample space for community congregation. The front porch will open to a sloping lawn with a long vista, the community room will open to a more private backyard courtyard space with adjacent lawn, and the side of the library near the forest will be stitched into the landscape with additional evergreen plantings. The surrounding meadow will be a beautiful and high-performing landscape that will contribute to a healthy ecosystem.
