191-195 BOWDOIN STREET HOUSING
191-195 Bowdoin Street is a mixed-use, affordable housing development located in Dorchester, MA. G2 worked with the developer, Viet Aid, to design outdoor spaces that would provide a community courtyard for future residents as well as a separate streetscape design for the customers for the Dorchester Community Food Co-op which occupies the ground floor of the building.
An open plaza wraps the corner of the site with amphitheater steps and seating, helping to transition from Bowdoin Street to the much steeper Topliff Street. The landscape design attempts to create a separation in entry open spaces for the building residents and users of the Food Co-op. Surrounded by planting, the front courtyard welcomes residents from the street and the corner plaza. A combination of mixed textures of soft grasses, irregular bluestone and natural boulders create moments for residents to pause and linger and allows for views in and out of the community room. Parking for residents is below the building itself and the larger parking area for visitors and the Food Co-op sits behind the building.
